Tournée Minérale : Sober Sour

 

Sober October, Dry January, Tournée Minérale, … I’m not a big fan of these temporary prohibition periods, which also involve some peer pressure. I think it’s always better (and healthier!) to use some common sense and enjoy quality drinks responsibly all year long. Does that mean I never drink non-alcoholic drinks as an aperitif ? Of course not. My daughter has a lot of “after school activities” and just like any other parent I often have to be her personal taxi-driver. On those days I mostly enjoy non-alcohol or low-alcohol drinks.

Until a few years ago this meant having to settle for a softdrink or juice. This had changed. For those of you who are looking for a real alternative to popular spirits, in the last two years a whole new range of NA spirits appeared on the Belgian market.
For me a mocktail is never a mix of juices. For me a mocktail is exactly what it says, a drink that looks and tastes like a real cocktail. If I don’t tell you it’s a mocktail, you would probably think there is alcohol in it.

In earlier articles we already created drinks with NA spirits from Seedlip, Nona, Nudo, The Bitter Note, … brands you really should give a try. I often hear remarks about ‘high priced flavoured water’, but if you take into account that these products contain several separate distillates and oils which are pretty expensive to produce, you might reconsider that thought. In my opinion gin is also often overpriced, because it doesn’t need to be aged like whisky. But the production process of gin and these NA spirits seem to be equally expensive. Just to be complete, just like not all gins are high quality, also not all NA spirits are high quality. I have tasted NA spirits which are basically water with a slight hint of lemon.
 
Today I combined two premium NA brands to create a sour-style cocktail.

Sober Sour

Ingredients
5 cl Nona June (NA Spirit with a taste similar to gin)
2 cl The Bitter Note (NA amaro)
3 cl fresh squeezed lemonjuice
2 cl vanilla syrup

Method
Add everything to a shaker with ice. Shake for 15 seconds. Fine-strain into a coupe. Some dried melon completes the picture.

Stijlvolle Geschenktips : Mocktail Monday met NUDO

 

Laten we het nog eens hebben over alcoholvrije spirits. De benaming alleen al zorgt soms voor heftige discussies tussen spiritliefhebbers. Als er iets is wat ik met zekerheid kan zeggen, dan is het dat de kwaliteit van de producten die recent op de markt kwamen merkelijk verbeterd is.

Seedlip was zowat de eerste die deze nieuwe markt echt heeft opengebroken. Bij hun producten heb ik vooral het gevoel dat ze de consumenten willen verrassen met nieuwe en zelfs ongewone smaken. Op zich heb ik daar uiteraard helemaal niets op tegen, maar ik vraag me wel af of je daarmee ook de verstokte cocktail- of gin-liefhebber echt kan overtuigen.

Een aantal producenten hebben intussen door dat als je een NA spirit wil maken die als regelrechte vervanging van gin op de markt komt… dat die dan ook echt naar gin moet smaken. Nona June was eigenlijk de allereerste waarbij ik het gevoel had dat er een zeer grote sprong voorwaarts was gemaakt. Daarom was ik ook heel nieuwsgierig naar dit gloednieuwe Belgische product, dat eveneens beweert de echte gin-liefhebber te willen verleiden.
Nudo is een “Premium Non-Alcoholic Spirit” en een merk uit de portefeuille van Albatross Liquors. In tegenstelling tot alle eerdere NA spirits die ikzelf heb gezien en geproefd is de vloeistof in dit geval niet geheel doorzichtig wat het ook een beetje uniek maakt. Deze spirit werd gemaakt met meerdere kruiden, zestes en bloemen.

De makers van Nudo Drinks vinden de flessen van hun concurrenten vaak hoog geprijsd. Door letterlijk alles in eigen huis te doen, proberen ze zelf de verkoopprijs zoveel mogelijk te drukken. De volledige ontwikkeling, productie, marketing en verkoop gebeuren dus in eigen beheer.

Uiteraard ben ik altijd nieuwsgierig naar de productie. In dit geval is het een combinatie van maceratie, extractie en cold press. Het product blijft heel natuurlijk, zonder toegevoegde suiker, zonder bewaarmiddelen. Het water dat gebruikt wordt voor de productie is gefilterd via omgekeerde osmose.

Als ultieme test proefde ik een Nudo & Tonic met een paar jeneverbessen erbij. Je mist alleszins de alcohol niet. Je zou absoluut kunnen denken dat het om een Gin & Tonic gaat, maar eerlijk is eerlijk… vergelijk het dan wel met een gin die zichzelf niet teveel op de voorgrond plaatst.

Conclusie : Absoluut een prima alternatief voor de BOB van het gezelschap… of tijdens een alcoholvrije maand. Binnenkort komt immers ook Tournée Minérale er weer aan en zal je heel blij zijn dat dit soort producten bestaat !
