Regular followers of Double Strainger will know that, during the summer months, I love settling down at a sunny terrace with a refreshing Aperol Spritz in hand. A little taste of Italian sunshine in a glass, if you ask me!
Until now, people have generally made this popular Italian aperitivo fresh, using three parts Prosecco or another sparkling wine, two parts Aperol, and a generous splash of soda water. Simple, refreshing and just perfect for a leisurely summer afternoon.
For those who appreciate a little extra convenience, Aperol previously introduced small ready-to-serve bottles. They come surprisingly close to the freshly mixed experience, while offering a similar ABV of around 9%.
This summer, Aperol added another option to the line-up: a ready-to-drink Spritz in a can. Ideal for a picnic, a barbecue, or a day by the water. Chill it in the fridge, crack it open and you're good to go. But does a canned Spritz still deliver the same experience?
One detail initially made me raise an eyebrow: the alcohol content is just 5% ABV. That's a considerable difference compared with the classic Spritz and the previously available bottled version.
So, what about the taste? To be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised. The familiar flavour profile is still very much there, and the difference compared with a freshly made Aperol Spritz is less noticeable than I had expected.
Personally, I'll always have a soft spot for a freshly prepared cocktail, carefully balanced and served in a beautiful glass filled with ice. That said, I can certainly see these cans as a convenient alternative for occasions when ease matters, and a refreshing Spritz still sounds like the perfect choice.
After all, not every cocktail needs to be mixed behind a bar to make a sunny moment that little bit more enjoyable.
Salute! 🍊🥂
